Alton "Bud" GladieuxJune 3, 1924 ~ January 17, 2018 (age 93)
Alton “Bud” Gladieux, age 93, of Rossford, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. A native of Ft. Wayne, IN, Mr. Gladieux was a retired educator who served over 30 years in the classroom and administrative posts, mostly in the Rossford Public Schools.
He was assistant principal of the high school in Rossford School System when he retired in 1977. Previously, he had been athletic director, principal of the Rossford Junior High School and was a high school classroom teacher and coach in Rossford. He was with the Rossford schools for 23 years. Earlier he taught in Waterville, Payne and Rising Sun districts all in Ohio.
Although deeply committed to his coaching and teaching career, he told friends he was a youth worker and that helping form and develop good character was his main job. He always showed tough love. Following his retirement, he operated a painting business with clients throughout the greater Toledo area.
He was a member of the “River Rats”, an informal group of senior citizens which met for cards and fellowship in the Rossford Marina Facilities on a daily basis throughout the year. He also enjoyed for over 60 years, his cottage at West Otter Lake in Angola, IN which he called “God’s Country”.
Bud had also been a volunteer chairman of the Local Heart Association for 5 years, the Wood County Democrats, Friends of the Rossford Public Library, Rossford Athletic Boosters Club, the Ohio Athletic Directors’ Association, Eagle Point Colony Association Executive Committee, and is also a member of the Rossford High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He has also been a long time member of All Saints Catholic Church in Rossford.
Bud earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of Toledo and a Master’s Degree in Administration from Bowling Green State University. While at the University of Toledo he played football for Doc Spears and was a member of the “Friddle Freshman” basketball team. That team went on to lose to St. John’s in 1942 in the finals of the NIT tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Survivors include his children, Susan (Kenneth) Lanoue, William (Cynthia) Gladieux and Alice (Robert Bruegger) Stephens; grandchildren, Wendy Ferguson, Julie (John McRae) Ferguson, Ryan (Brittany) Gladieux, Mindy (Douglas) Irvine, Matthew (Alexis) Gladieux, Adam (Jacqueline) Gladieux, Caitlin (John) Cunningham, April (Andrew) Campbell and Justin (Jamie) Gladieux; 19 great grandchildren, and number 20 on the way.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Justin and Pearl Gladieux; wife of 38 years, Patricia; and his son, Herman.
Family and friends may visit at the Sujkowski Funeral Home of Rossford on Monday, January 22, 2018 830 Lime City Rd. Rossford, Ohio 43460 from 3-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 11 AM at All Saints Catholic Church, 628 Lime City Rd. Rossford, Ohio 43460 where the family will greet guests beginning at 10 AM. Interment will be private. The family suggests Memorials in Bud’s name to be made to the Patricia Gladieux Scholarship Fund at the Rossford High School, 701 Superior St. Rossford, Ohio 43460.
