LaVerne A. Drew, age 92 passed away on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the University of Toledo Medical Center. She was born on May 13, 1926 in Garfield Heights, Ohio to Charles and Mary (Pijanowski) Deranek.
Surviving are her sons, William and Jerome Drew; and daughter, Mary (Todd) Sterling. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one niece.
During her lifetime, she was the devoted wife of her husband, George for fifty years. A stay at home mother, she raised four loving children. An avid reader, she was also an outdoor enthusiast with a love of walking, biking and skiing. She and her husband enjoyed camping and traveling.
A woman of many and varied talents and passions, LaVerne was a skilled cook and baker as well as a master gardener. An award-winning quilter, basket weaver and crafter, she shared her arts and crafts with numerous charities for their benefit. A Girl Scout leader in her younger days, she also volunteered extensively on behalf of the Knights of Columbus with her husband.
LaVerne was an extraordinarily generous and caring person even to the end. She raised and trained her beloved Freddie to become a therapy dog. They then spent the next five years visiting sick and infirm patients in local hospitals and nursing homes bringing some joy to their lives.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George in 1997; and daughter, Cheryl in 2012.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at St. Joseph Church, 104 W. Broadway, Maumee, OH 43537 at 10 AM. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Maumee. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Sujkowski Funeral Home of Rossford. Memorials in LaVerne’s memory may be directed to St. Joseph Church.
