Louis Gwozdz Obituary

Louis Vincent Gwozdz, 88 years old, died Wednesday morning in his home. Born on March 24, 1930, Louie was the son of Vincent and Frances (Kedzior) Gwozdz. He was raised in Rossford and attended St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School and Rossford High School, where he played basketball, football and baseball. He married his high school sweetheart, Leona Gibel, on March 31, 1951, and she survives. Louie was drafted into the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in the Korean War. Afterwards, he was employed for 40 years at the former Libbey Owens Ford glass factory in Rossford.

Louie was a dedicated fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns, despite their sometimes dismal records. He enjoyed playing bingo for 35 years, and always took his chances on scratch off lottery tickets. The Hollywood Casino was his favorite destination. Louie was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and talked endlessly of them.

Louie is survived by his wife of 67 years, Leona; children Cindy (Herman) Stolk of Perrysburg, Diane Spencer of Rossford, Barbara Laux of Salt Lake City, and Bob (Leslie) Gwozdz of Clinton, IL; grandchildren Beth Laux of Salt Lake City, Mark (Monica) Laux of Mountain View, CA, Jonathan (Ruqaiya Al Abri) Stolk of Perrysburg, Bradley Stolk of Kansas City, Kayla Gwozdz of Oviedo, FL, Kiel Gwozdz of Rossford and Kasey Gwozdz of Clinton, IL; great-grandchildren Andrew Stolk and Blaise, Eva, Rex and Vance Laux; sisters in law, Lela Nale and Christine Gibel.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Louie was preceded in death by his parents; in laws, Andrew and Leona Gibel; brothers, Joseph Nale, Frank (Thelma) Nale, Henry (Cecelia) Gwozdz, Stanley (Josephine) Gwozdz and Leonard Gwozdz; brother in law, Donald Gibel; and those from his extended families, the Warchols and Kachmariks.

Louis’ family would like to thank his neighbors Mark and LeAnn Marek and Dave and Jennifer Verbosky, who helped him in ways too numerous to mention; Nurse Laura and Desiree, Tammy, Patrick and Andy from Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Rev. Anthony Recker for his spiritual care.
